Blog Update #11 - Phase 1 Recompleted
Hello there, cool cats, and welcome to this year's State of the Blog address! I'm here today because I want to update you on recent site happenings and because, well, it's about time that the home page's first entry is anything other than the same Beyond Shadowgate wrap-up that's been occupying that spot for the last twelve months.I have a couple of things that I want to talk about in this update, and I'd like to start by mentioning that my "Memory Bank Remaster" project, which entailed the rewriting of every Memory Bank piece, is finally completed. It took me way longer than I thought it would, and after five years, I'm relieved that it's done, and I hope that I never have to do it again!
Join me in celebrating the project's completion by selecting your preferred victory music and general musical accompaniment:
For those who are unaware: I had to completely rewrite each Memory Bank piece for the reasons that I listed in my previous blog update. The short of it is that I didn't know what I was doing when I started the the original project, and I lacked the type of literacy that you need to possess if you want to accurately identify and explain game game mechanics and put abstract thoughts (nostalgic feelings, mainly) into words, so I wound up producing works that read as though they were written by an 8-year-old.
The majority of the pieces were poor in quality and personally disappointing to me, so I had to rewrite them and get them to place in which they clearly and intelligently expressed their points and had real heart to them. Others (like those for Blaster Master, Battletoads and Castlevania: Bloodlines) had to be completely rewritten and updated because of how drastically my feelings on them have changed since the project began.
So now I'm happy with them and ready to move on to new things.
There are still a few games that I have to go back to and re-update (Altered Beast, Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja, Impossible Mission, and one or two others) due to changes that have occurred in recent years, but because said updates will probably be small and not completely story-altering, I won't even bother reporting on them. (I'm only mentioning this for documentation purposes.)
The sad fact is that I lost a lot of time on these rewrites. The process of doing so ate up all of the time that I was planning to use for other projects, and as a result, I fell behind by several years (my original plan was to finish the project by the time I was 40, which was now almost 7 years ago).
At one point, also, I got seriously sidetracked by my spontaneously initiated mission to seek out and beat the hardest games in existence, and that wound up monopolizing all of my gaming time and depleting me of the energy to write about video games. Consequently I missed opportunities to express my thoughts on the experiences that I was having.
So for those reasons, I'm getting a really late start on this next phase.
"So what's next for this blog?" you might be wondering (as you start nodding off).
Well, dear reader, I honestly don't have any type of specific plan or goal for this next phase. What I'm going to do from here on out, rather, is whatever I feel like doing at any point in time! So an upcoming piece could be anything. It could be a review, an in-depth examination, an essay, an opinion piece, a quick impression, a top-ten list, or something completely random!
I can't promise that future posts will appear with great frequency, because how much I produce depends upon how I feel at a given time (and things are going to be a little more difficult for me now because I have more responsibilities than I had in 2015), but I can tell you that I have a lot of individual pieces planned and that I'll absolutely be providing plenty of of fun content over the years.
For now, though, I'm going to take a little break from writing about games and focus on tidying up my Castlevania site, which I've been neglecting in recent years. But I'll be back next year, hopefully in the early months, with whatever my brain cooks up. (Follow my Twitter account if you want to more conveniently keep up with this blog's activities and thus refrain from having to constantly revisit and refresh the home page.)
I'll see you then!
